| Gary Robb
is the Director of the National Center on Accessibility in
Bloomington, Indiana and of Bradford Woods, Indiana University's
2500 Acre Center for Outdoor and Leadership Development located
in Martinsville, Indiana. Robb is also an Associate Professor
in the Department of Recreation and Park Administration, School
of HPER, at Indiana University. Working with people with disabilities
in recreation environments for more than 35 years, Robb is
internationally recognized as one of the leaders in the therapeutic
recreation movement.
The National Center
on Accessibility provides national level training, technical
assistance and research in the recreation, parks and tourism
field. As part of his responsibility with the Center, he has
been working extensively with federal government agencies in
developing and implementing guidelines for making recreation
areas, facilities and programs accessible to persons with disabilities
in the United States.
Robb is a past
president of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and
member of the Board of Trustees of the National Recreation and
Park Association and a two term member of the President's Committee
on Employment of Persons With Disabilities. He has provided
national leadership in the development of standards and programs
related to golf and people with disabilities and was the co-founder
of the National Alliance for Accessible Golf.
Robb holds undergraduate
and graduate degrees from the University of Utah and in 1984
was named the distinguished alumni of the Department of Recreation
and Leisure Services, School of Health from that university.
He has worked with persons with disabilities for over 25 years.
Robb was instrumental
in signing a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service
to conduct nationwide accessibility training programs for federal
and state employees. He also developed a cooperative agreement
between Indiana University and Loughborough University (England)
and has been named Senior Visiting Research Fellow in the Centre
for Research in Social Policy, Loughborough University.
He has directed
major grant projects in curriculum development, capital improvement
projects, and innovative education and training projects (Indiana).
He has consulted on grant projects with the US Department of
Education, many U.S. Universities, Architectural firms, the
American Foundation for the Blind, the American Camping Association,
and private consulting firms.
As Executive Director
of the National Center on Accessibility, Robb heads up the Center’s
national research, education and training agendas related to
the game of golf. He served on the U.S. Architectural and Transportation
Board’s committee to develop accessibility standards for
golf courses. He has been the Co-Coordinator of the National
Forum on Accessible Golf, a program designed to facilitate integration
of persons with disabilities into the game of golf. The Forum
has included representatives from all of the major golf industry
organizations (PGA, LPGA, NGF, GCSAA, USGA, NGCOA, etc.) as
well as organizations serving golfers with disabilities. The
Forum received the Association of Disabled American Golfers
Pioneer Award in 1997 and sparked the creation of the National
Alliance for Accessible Golf.
