| The
United States Golf Association (USGA) is a current
sponsor of the Dennis Walters Golf Show. Dennis
is an internationally-acclaimed golf trick-shot
artist. He travels throughout the country providing
an entertaining hour-long show, that not only
shows some incredible skill but also spreads the
message that having a disability shouldn’t
keep people from seeking their own dreams of playing
golf.
Walters’ association
with the USGA goes all the way back to the
1971 U.S. Amateur Championship, where he finished
11th. During that time, Walters was preparing
to try for a career as a professional golfer.
This dream was sidelined in 1974 when he suffered
an accident on the golf course that left him
paralyzed below the waist. While many golfers
would have given up their dreams of pursuing
golf as a career when faced this adversity,
Walters embraced it. During his rehabilitation,
he adapted a swivel chair onto a golf cart,
allowing him to play from a seated position.
Since this time he has used the game of golf
to promote his message, that almost all things
are truly possible. Beginning in 1977, Walters
has been spreading his passion for golf to
audiences throughout the world with his traveling
Golf Show.
Having a deep interest
in promoting the lessons and values that can
be taught through the game of golf, Walters
entered in a contract with the USGA in 2002
to help spread golf’s ideals and further
the public’s awareness that individuals
with disabilities can play the game of golf.
Since its inception, the USGA-supported “Catch
Golf’s Spirit” tour has taken
the Dennis Walters Golf Show to 85 cities
and to many USGA championships, including
the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Woman’s
Amateur, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Junior Amateur
and U.S. Girls Junior Amateur.
“I am very excited
to be a part of the growth of the game of
golf and am proud to have support from the
USGA this year,” said Walters. “The
USGA has shown through its actions that it
cares not only about the future of the game
of golf, but also about improving people's
lives through the game. I think that my show,
all about golf lessons and life lessons, fits
in very nicely with these overall goals, and
I look forward to spreading the message even
further.”
“Dennis Walters exemplifies
everything that the USGA is trying to accomplish
through the game of golf,” said USGA
President Reed Mackenzie. “Anyone can
play, anyone can learn life lessons through
golf, and anything is possible, in both life
and golf, if you’re willing to work
hard enough.”
